Dutch super car maker Donkervoort has launched the ultimate variant of their ultra fast D8 series: The manic Donkervoort D8 GTO-JD70 Bare Naked Carbon Edition (BNCE). The latter part of the name refers to the exposed carbon fiber body panels, compromising 95% of the car’s entire bodywork. JD70 is an homage to the the 70th birthday of Joop Donkervoort, the founder of the company. Donkervoort calls the D8 GTO-JD70 “the world’s first 2G production car” because it can pull 2.05G of lateral acceleration in and out of corners.
The D8 GTO-JD70 BNCE is powered by a heavily reworked Audi-sourced 2.5 liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine. Output is 415 hp and 520 Nm. The motor is mated to a Tremec short-throw rev-matching five-speed manual gearbox, sending every horse to the rear wheels. And these horses don’t need to pull a lot of weight as the D8 is a very light car. The carbon body is sculpted around a hybrid chassis, made out of a mix of carbon, aluminum, and tubular steel. Donkervoort saved even more weight by making the seats and dashboard from carbon fiber as well. Finally, the traditional lead-acid car battery has been replaced by a lithium-ion unit, saving another 7 kilo. The result is an unladen to DIN weight (car excluding fluids) of just 695 kilo.
Low weight and high power: The D8 GTO-JD70 BNCE goes like hell. It does 0-100 in 2.7 seconds and 0-200 in 7.7 seconds. Top speed is 280 kilometers per hour. Normally, fuel consumption isn’t much of an issue in cars like these, but in this case it does: The D8 drinks 7.7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (combined), which is not that bad for a performance car, but it has a fuel tank of only 44 liter. Go fast before you run out of juice!
To make a safe stop at the gas station you need a high performance brake system and tires. The D8 GTO-JD70 BNCE is fitted with Nankang semi-slicks, 17 inch front and 18 inch rear. The wheels are fitted with forged alloy wheels. The brake system consists of ventilated Tarox wave-pattern brake discs, with 310mm x 24mm discs at the front and 285mm x 24mm brake discs at the rear. Brake calipers are six-piston-monobloc at the front and single-piston caliper at the rear. The brake balance of the front calipers is fully adjustable. There is no ABS.
The D8 GTO-JD70 BNCE is the fastest car ever made by Donkervoort, and it is also the fastest accelerating car ever made in the Netherlands. But even faster D8’s are under way; Donkervoort is rumored to work on a mild-hybrid version of the D8 GTO, with even more horsepower and, hopefully, with a somewhat better fuel consumption.
